INTERVIEW AT COMMISSION

For gay / lesbian asylum seekers

  1. You are in front of two people, the commissioner and the interpreter. The commissioner asks you if you understand the interpreter well. They explain to you that the decision will be taken by the whole 4-person commission, even if only one is questioning you.

They explain to you what types of documents they can give you, which are:

A-refugee status, 5-year renewable, UN passport and the possibility to apply for Italian citizenship after 5 years

B-subsidiary protection, 5 years and UN passport but renewable only after checks

C – Other types of documents of one or two years related to your health, the situation in your country or the exploitation of which you are a victim.

Usually LGBT people, if trusted, get the refugee status

  1. They ask you a series of short questions about your name, your date of birth, the place where you were born, the family, the schools you attended in your country and the work you did. This is the time to correct registry errors. They ask you if you are still in contact with your family and if any of your relatives already live in Europe with documents
  1. They ask you to tell them why you ran away from your country. This is the time to tell your whole story, and the inspector won’t interrupt you. Only at the end, they ask you questions to clarify and deepen the points they have not understood correctly or have doubts about
  1. They ask you specific questions about how you found out you were homosexual. Here you have to be ready to talk about your first emotions and feelings towards people of the same sex and about your relations as a gay / lesbian with family, religion and society. They also want to know how much you were aware of the danger and punishment that you risk being gay / lesbian in your country
  1. They ask you some questions about your current life, asking if you have relationships, if you work, if you study and if you frequent LGBT associations
  1. They ask you what problems you might have if you should go back to your country now

The points to be prepared with the most attention are 3, 4 and 6. These are the moments when the inspector investigates your personality and tries to understand if you are really gay / lesbian or if you are lying to get the documents. You have to be careful not to contradict yourself and to accept talking about very personal feelings, but without telling details of sexual experiences

THE “VERBALE”

All that is said during the audition, the questions, the answers and your story, are transcribed in Italian on a document that in the end is reread in your language, and that you will sign for acceptance ONLY IF YOU DO NOT FIND ERRORS AND LACK . Remember that the commission report is a very important document, because the commission’s decision and also the court’s decision, if the commission is negative, will be taken on the things written on it. You have the right to refuse to sign and ask for corrections until you are satisfied and convinced of the things that are reported. Only sign at that point

INTERPRETER

Remember that the interpreter is not a mediator and is not your helper: he only has the function of translating, and the dialogue must be solely between you and the commissioner. Ask for explanations about things you don’t understand directly to the commissioner, and if you understand Italian, try to understand even if the interpreter and the commissioner comment or talk to each other for longer than what is needed to translate the things you said.

YOUR RIGHTS

The interview in committee is your moment. You have the right to use all the time you need, even if they try to hurry you. You have the right to request breaks. You have the right to request that the commission be suspended and that they give you a new appointment if you do not feel well, if you feel too nervous to remember everything you want to tell and if it seems to you that the translator is not doing his job correctly

 

Report on the meeting with the migrants, Sunday 10th March, area in front of the Cavarzerani CAS (Udine)

Resoconto del presidio di domenica 10 marzo di fronte al C.A.S ex-caserma Cavarzerani (Udine)
Alle 15.30 il piazzale antistante l’ex caserma è completamente deserto, ad eccezione dello schieramento di carabinieri, polizia, vigili e digos. Dall’interno giunge voce che la croce rossa abbia impedito a tutti di uscire dal campo fin dalla prima mattina in barba ai tanto sbandierati orari di entrata/uscita, con la motivazione che “la polizia li avrebbe presi e portati via” qualora fossero usciti. I migranti sono stati praticamente sequestrati per l’intera giornata all’interno del campo col solo fine di non permettere loro di unirsi al presidio. Nel frattempo arriva qualche migrante residente in città e vengono fatti alcuni interventi al microfono rivolti ai secondini della croce rossa. Solo alle 17.30, dopo che il capo-kapò della croce rossa si è intrattenuto a lungo con i poliziotti in borghese presenti, i cancelli vengono aperti, e diversi altri migranti restati per ore in attesa dietro di esso possono raggiungere il presidio. Viene distribuito un bel po’ di materiale in varie lingue sul decreto Salvini e sui C.P.R. e il sistema a cui sono funzionali. E’ rimasto comunque un bel po’ di tempo per un interessante scambio di informazioni reciproche.

Sulla croce rossa che dire? Dopo aver piagnucolato negli ultimi giorni sui giornali locali per aver inspiegabilmente perso la gestione della caserma a favore di una cooperativa di Napoli, ha in tutta fretta deportato decine di migranti ad un albergo da lei gestito a Lignano Sabbiadoro (UD) . Difficile spiegare infatti come possa aver perso la gestione della caserma a base di locali non riscaldati in pieno inverno, vestiario invernale non fornito, cibo avariato, servizio di lavanderia non garantito, lavoro gratis, divieto di cucinare in autonomia, minacce, ritorsioni, punizioni umilianti. Sarà che è troppo pure per la prefettura.
Ieri la CRI si è mostrata per quello che è, un’organizzazione paramilitare che non si fa problemi a rinchiudere decine di persone per paura che certe cose possano uscire dal loro campo…

At 15.30 the area in front of the camp is totally empty, with the exception of a line of policemen, traffic wardens, and digos (political police). From the inside there is word that the Red Cross has blocked the migrants from leaving the camp since early morning, in contrast with the official leaving and entering hours that they like to advertise, threatening that “the police will stop them and take them away” if they go out.
The migrants have basically been confined inside the camp for the whole day solely to be prevented from joining the meeting.
In the meantime, some migrants from town arrive, and there are some speeches aimed at the Red Cross jailers.
Only at 17.30, after the boss of the Red Cross took his time chatting with some policemen in plainclothes, the gates are opened, and many migrants who have waited behind them for hours are able to join the meeting. A lot of material about the Salvini Decree Law and the CPRs that make it possibile is shared, and there is also a lot of time to exchange other interesting informations.

What can we say about the Red Cross? After whining in local newspapers for having inesplicably lost the management of the camp to a cooperative from Napoli, they have hastily deported dozens of migrants to a hotel they manage in Lignano Sabbiadoro (Udine). It is indeed very difficult to understand how they can possibly have lost the management of a camp where several spaces aren’t heated even in winter, the clothes are not provided, the food is rotten, the laudry service is not guaranteed, the migrants have to provide unpaid labour, to endure threats, repercussions, and humiliating punishments… Maybe it has become too much even for the prefecture…
Yesterday the Italian Red Cross has showed its true face as a paramilitary organization that doesn’t think twice about locking up dozens of people for fear that certain things may be revealed…

Report 15/12/2018 Solidarity meeting in front of Cavarzerani CAS – Udine

Resoconto del presidio di sabato 15 dicembre di fronte al C.A.S ex-caserma Cavarzerani (Udine)

Nella notte del 15 novembre scorso, circa 150 migranti dell’ex caserma Cavarzerani hanno dato vita ad una rivolta spontanea in protesta contro le condizioni del cibo loro somministrato dalla “azienda della ristorazione” CAMST per conto della croce rossa locale che gestisce il centro. La protesta è sedata solo dall’intervento di diverse pattuglie e reparti di polizia. Al momento il Centro di Accoglienza Straordinaria ospita oltre 550 persone.

Nelle settimane precedenti il presidio è stato volantinato nei dintorni della caserma un testo in urdu e inglese in cui si spiegavano le ragioni di un primo presidio rivolto ai migranti del campo.

La sera prima arriva un’indiscrezione secondo cui la croce rossa avrebbe vietato l’uscita dal campo nel pomeriggio, invece alla fine si è limitata a cambiare gli orari di entrata/uscita “per la sola giornata di sabato” anticipando di un’ora e riducendo l’apertura dei cancelli (dalle 14.00 alle 14.15) nel tentativo di disincentivare la partecipazione al presidio, dal momento che i migranti avrebbero dovuto aspettare un’ora prima che il presidio cominciasse, cosa che poi hanno effettivamente fatto. 
La loro risposta in termini numerici è molto buona, sulle 150-200 persone. E’ stato così possibile raccogliere e scambiare informazioni reciproche sullo stato delle cose dentro e fuori al campo. Ad esempio, che la croce rossa era assai poco contenta e nervosa riguardo ad una presenza esterna non calcolata.

A questo momento ne seguiranno altri, vogliamo far sapere a queste persone che non sono e non saranno sole nelle loro lotte e nella quotidiana repressione a cui sono sottoposte.

17/11 Solidarietà ai migranti in protesta alla Caverzerani!

Siamo solidali con i migranti della Caverzerani che hanno dato vita ad una protesta all’interno della struttura per denunciare la qualità indecente del cibo che gli viene somministrato ogni giorno.
Non si contano i casi dei gestori di posti come questo che propinano cibo immangiabile e guasto per lucrare sulla pelle di persone costrette in questi luoghi, dall’infame sistema delle frontiere e perchè non hanno il privilegio del documento e del colore della pelle “giusto”.
La ventilata accusa di procurato allarme mossa nei confronti di chi ha iniziato la protesta è chiaramente una ritorsione e un’intimidazione perchè quello che succede dentro non venga divulgato.
Siamo vicine e vicini a chi decide di alzare la testa e denunciare i soprusi, nonostante l’estrema ricattabilità della propria condizione di richiedenti asilo.
